Secrets, Unknowns and Speculations
Here I have gathered some things that are not known (at least widely) among the human denizens
of this milieau, at least as of 2303.
- Brown Dwarves
- Isolated brown dwarves, if discovered, might open up important and even
dangerous pathways between the stars. Perhaps the Ylii or the Pentapods have
mapped more of these than humanity. In the case of the Ylii, perhaps it is
knowledge they simply haven't thought of using, or perhaps it was deliberately
suppressed. Pentapods could have just about any reason for not revealing it
yet. Since they seem to enjoy trade games, perhaps they wish to sell us
the knowledge. And perhaps the Ebers used to know, but recovering the
knowledge could be as difficult as reconstructing their longer-ranged
stardrive. The Old Gringo suggests that individual discoveries of isolated
Brown Dwarves never be too conveniently located.
- Curtain Dragons
- This aquatic species of Kormoran (82 Eridani IV) is actually sentient.
- Eber Homeworld
- The Eber homeworld is not 82 Eridani IV (Kormoran.) The fact that the
Ebers are quadrapeds while most higher life on Kormoran is six-limbed should
give a clue to that. It's possible, in fact, that the Ebers are from a lot
further away; perhaps there are other worlds where they still live. Neither of
the two worlds with known Eber ruins seems to have lifeforms resembling the
Ebers.
- Eber Stardrive
- In their star-travelling days, the Ebers used a stutterwarp drive with a
limit of 9.4 light years. This technology can be replicated and probably will.
Unfortunately, this drive gives off fatal levels of radiation for humans; the
Ebers are much more resistant. It will take a lot more work (and luck) to make
it usable for anything but completely robotic craft.
- Hrunting Ruins
- The ruins on one of the moons of Beowulf belong to an unknown civilization.
- Pentapods
- The pentapods humanity knows are not an independent race. The are instead
the creations of their "gods," enormous and vastly intelligent
beings who live in an ocean on some world, or perhaps worlds, undiscovered by
humanity. pentapod gods send out living "bullets" to do their
business, tailoring them for their missions. The pentapods are designed for a
lot more independence than most since they may have to spend most of their
lives away from their master/parent. Placement of a god's world will have a
great effect on the campaign, especially if it is the only world where
the pentapod gods can themselves live. If it is close enough for the Kafers to
stumble onto, the pentapods are liable to become much less pacifistic.
